At the same time, millennials are unlikely to cut coupons, so restaurants like McDonald\u2019s, Papa Murphy\u2019s, and Ponderosa are using smartphone apps like Front Flip to lure millennials addicted to their cell phones.<\/p>\n<h2>How mobile scratch cards work<\/h2>\n<p>Ponderosa steakhouse visitors can scan a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myassettag.com\/qr-asset-tags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">QR code<\/a> on the back of their receipt once they\u2019ve downloaded the Front Flip app on their smartphones. A <a href=\"https:\/\/streetfightmag.com\/2013\/08\/08\/case-study-restaurant-chain-uses-mobile-promotions-to-reach-millennials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">virtual scratch card<\/a> will then show up on their screens. Customers rub their fingers across these cards to reveal their prize. Prizes range from discounts, free meals and drinks to gift cards and iPads.\u00a0Other players in the food category are also using QR codes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myassettag.com\/blog\/httpwww-myassettag-comblogqr-codes-keep-sushi-sustainable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">innovatively<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Pros of mobile scratch cards<\/h2>\n<p>Franchisees \u201cwere really challenging us to develop something that had a little bit more excitement and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrn.com\/marketing-branding\/ponderosa-bonanza-see-potential-in-smartphone-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ability to engage guests<\/a>, especially the younger segment of our demographic,\u201d says Jon Rice, chief marketing officer of Ponderosa\u2019s parent company, Homestyle Dining.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2764\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myassettag.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Front-Flip-Loyalty-Marketing-300x227-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2764\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2764 \" title=\"mobile-scratch-cards\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myassettag.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Front-Flip-Loyalty-Marketing-300x227-1.png\" alt=\"Front-Flip-Loyalty-Marketing-300x227\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Front Flip user. Although only 17% of the chain\u2019s customers are 18-29 years old, Rice says the highest percentage of Front Flip users at the restaurants are 24-34 years old. \u201cPeople are definitely using it, and they are definitely coming back. We\u2019re breaking down that information to understand if we, in fact, are increasing their frequency. Right now, it appears so,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>There are other benefits. Front Flip\u2019s interface makes it possible for restaurants to \u201clook at the level of activity, what prizes people have won and whether anybody has shared it on Facebook. They can get a feel for whether people are actually excited about it,\u201d says Rice.<\/p>\n<p>Front Flip provides other data that restaurants can use for marketing to customers. &#8220;We track what day of week they&#8217;re coming, what time of day and how often they come, and all the data goes\u00a0to\u00a0the business,&#8221; says\u00a0Sean Beckner, CEO of Front Flip.<\/p>\n<p>To get customers who haven\u2019t visited a restaurant in a month or more to return, Front Flip automatically sends a \u201cgift\u201d the restaurant has picked, at regular intervals.<\/p>\n<h2>Costs and cons of mobile scratch cards<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_2767\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myassettag.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/millenials.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2767\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2767 \" title=\"mobile-scratch-cards-millennials\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myassettag.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/millenials-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"millenials\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myassettag.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/millenials-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.myassettag.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/millenials.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2767\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Millennials relish eating out. Rival Belly has a slightly different twist. For $50-100, restaurants get an iPad and a customized loyalty scheme. Customers scan a bar code from the app on the iPad, which tracks the points they earn and redeem.<\/p>\n<p>Drawbacks are similar to those seen in traditional loyalty schemes. Customers at Papa Murphy\u2019s franchisees using Front Flip complained that they were not winning often. The restaurant owners agreed to adjust the odds of losing on a given day from 30% to just 7.5%, according to Paul Cox, owner of one of the outlets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The [restaurant] market is not expanding, so everyone is in a fight for that one customer,\u201d says Todd Luther, owner of nine McDonald\u2019s, of which eight have Front Flip.\u00a0 Apps like Front Flip provide instant gratification to millennials, and can amplify eating out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424127887323855804578511440182179084\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">food events<\/a>.
